Let us unpack the implicit assumptions within this question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her worldview, democracy appears as a political ideal that can be transplanted across cultures \u2014 wherever its light shines, freedom and reason are expected to bloom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
H2: To criticize democracy is abnormal.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
When someone educated in the West no longer believes in democracy, it provokes surprise \u2014 as though it violates the narrative of progress and rationality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
H3: Intellectuals are meant to be missionaries of democracy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Within the Western intellectual tradition, reason and liberty form the scholar\u2019s creed. Hence, to \u201ccriticize democracy\u201d seems a betrayal of intellect itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But this very surprise reveals a deeper bias within Western academia: democracy as a one-way narrative \u2014 a civilizational export flowing from the \u201cenlightened\u201d center to the \u201cto-be-enlightened\u201d periphery.\nIn this narrative, democracy is not a question but an answer; not a hypothesis but a belief; not a field of inquiry but an article of faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
2.2. Democracy Has Never Been Universal: It Is Cultural, Contextual, and Historical<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
A glance at democracy\u2019s historical lineage reveals that it has never been a fixed formula, but rather a product of particular societies at particular moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In ancient Athens, democracy was limited to a small group of free male citizens; the vast majority \u2014 women, slaves, foreigners \u2014 were excluded from public life. Aristotle\u2019s conception of democracy in Politics was confined to that specific polis, already reflecting the structural inequalities of its time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Modern democracy, too, is not a single universal design but an accumulation of local experiments:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Britain forged its constitutional monarchy through a compromise between revolution and aristocracy;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The United States built a presidential republic shaped by federalist ideals after independence;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
France oscillated through revolutions and restorations before settling into its Fifth Republic\u2019s semi-presidential system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Each system emerged not from an abstract ideal, but from concrete struggles \u2014 class relations, historical legacies, and economic foundations. Democracy, in essence, is a local answer to the universal question of how we live together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Moreover, history shows that democracy often functions as an instrument of class power rather than a pure moral ideal.\nThe bourgeois demand of \u201cno taxation without representation\u201d was less a cry for universal equality than for institutionalized property rights.\nIn the United States, the entanglement of money and politics continues to reveal that electoral procedures frequently serve capital more than citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thus, democracy\u2019s meanings and mechanisms have constantly evolved with shifts in power, class, and culture.\nTo declare one form of democracy \u201cuniversal\u201d is to deny history itself and to silence the political diversity of human civilization.\nA genuine understanding of democracy must return to its social context and ask: \u201cWho holds power \u2014 and for whom is it exercised?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today, in the United States, that question remains unanswered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
3. What they criticize, perhaps, is not \"democracy\" itself<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
I have not read every text written by those who criticized democracy, nor do I claim to know their lives in full.\nBut if we walk briefly in their era, perhaps we can glimpse what they saw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some criticized the hypocrisy of democracy, exposing the minority rule hidden behind the rhetoric of majority consent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some lamented its hollowness, the procedural justice that failed to address real social suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Others resisted its ideological imperialism, where democracy presented itself as universal truth while erasing other civilizational paths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In other words, what they criticized was not democracy as an ideal, but democracy as a reality.\nThey were not betraying democracy \u2014 they were rewriting it within their own cultural and historical context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
4. Re-understanding: The diverse forms of democracy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
So, what is democracy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"Democracy\" is not a set of replicable institutional blueprint; it is an ongoing social experiment and a process of constantly exploring how societies can coexist. Its core is not elections but the inquiry into \"the will of the community\". The answers vary across different civilizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Throughout history, the light of critique has never been absent:\nMarx\u2019s exposure of bourgeois democracy\u2019s contradictions;\nthe Chinese May Fourth intellectuals\u2019 rebellion against dogma and feudalism;\nand the persistent questioning of Western centrism across the Global South.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Different voices, different aims \u2014 yet they all echo a timeless inquiry:\nHow can the smallest voices be heard?\nHow can the silent participate in creation?\nHow can power remain humble before the people?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Conclusion: Redefining Democracy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
So, when the professor asked, \u201cWhy did they criticize democracy?\u201d I found myself asking instead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cWhat do we mean when we say \u2018democracy\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Democracy is not an eternal answer but an unfinished debate.\nIts significance lies not in its origin, but in how each society redefines it through its lived experience.True democracy is not replication \u2014 it is creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It belongs not to any nation, but to all who continue to ask, \u201cHow shall we live together?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n
